After working in the Geriatric Field for over 15 years I thought I knew just about everything to help people find the caregiving resources for seniors they needed. Then, Along Came Grandpa. Caring for him gave me such a new perspective. Although I had years of professional experience, until I walked in the shoes of a caregiver, I didn’t really know how to help others. This book not only shares my story, the good, bad and ugly, it also gives helpful tips after each chapter to assist caregivers along their journey caring for an older adult.
A wide variety of caregiving resources are available on this site. Along with wanting to link caregivers with helpful resources, I also want to assist professionals. Many times in my professional life I have come across other professionals who are not aware of resources that would make their life a lot easier. Instead of re-creating the wheel, why not link to it! This site also has useful educational tools for professionals who work day to day with the geriatric population.
A bit about my new book... Ephesians 6:2-3 (NIV) exhorts us: “’Honor your father and mother’”. However, what happens when the commitment to honoring our parent’s leads us to feel guilty or make poor decisions based on self-reproach or lack of information and resources? Having acknowledged that, there is something—someone—else we need to consider. It is the other perspective: that of the aging loved one who begins to need more care. What is it like to suddenly become dependent on others?
If I Walked In Her Shoes shares a firsthand look at these dynamics by inviting you to view one day from two very different perspectives: Rose, the elderly mother in need of care and Sara, the dutiful caregiving daughter. Rose and Sara exemplify the issues faced by families trying to care for an aging loved one. You will experience their struggles, triumphs, and the underlying love that is the foundation of their relationship. Be sure to order your copy in either hardcover or paperback on our ordering page.
There is so much to know when it comes to helping older adults and their families, I pray that this site will be a powerful tool and provide you with the caregiving resources to help others who are Called to help older adults.
